And I’m just trying to make you see
I found out about the Dennis Hopper-directed film The Hot Spot from an article about erotic thrillers of the ’80s and ’90s. I was intrigued as I’ve seen a few but it’s not my go-to genre in film. I was at the time obsessed with watching The Last Seduction (meaning, I was obsessed with actually finishing the film, as sometimes it takes me days to complete a movie and that’s not at all reflective of the quality of the film. Sometimes my mind is just too all over the place to concentrate and not even a book or movie can sedate me).
The article was on a blog and with my Letterboxd open on a separate tab, I was making note of the movies I found the most appealing throughout the article. The Hot Spot was one of them.
I believe I mainly wanted to watch it because it starred Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelly. Two actresses that after years in the acting game, it wasn’t until much later in their careers, well into their thirties and forties, that that were cast in more “big budget” movies and the type of art house movies that managed to gain an audience and critical acclaim outside of the IFC circle.
For Madsen, I first heard of her in the 2004 film Sideways in which after so long she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. It was a similar case for Connelly for me as well. I first heard of her in the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind and she won the aforementioned Oscar for her role in that film.
Being that The Hot Spot came out years before their breakthroughs, and I had never really watched anything starring Dakota Johnson’s dad, except for a random episode of Miami Vice, I had enough reasons to go in search of it on one of the many streaming services available.
I found the film solid and while at times a bit slow, it goes with the atmosphere. Don Johnson’s character, Harry, arrives in a sleepy, balmy Texan town to work as a used car salesman and ends up in a love triangle. There’s Connelly’s character, Gloria, who (way too young for Harry in my opinion) is sweet, reserved, brunette and accommodating. Then there’s Madsen’s character, Dolly, who is feisty, fresh, blonde, and cantankerous. Without giving details away, Dolly becomes fixated on Harry and is aware that Harry is falling in love with Gloria.
Cue Electric Light Orchestra’s song “Evil Woman.”
I thought Madsen was however awesome in the role. Quite the femme fatale even though I was not rooting for her at all and Connelly was enjoyable and I believe she was close in age to her character, so her presence felt believable. I was saddened for Gloria.
As far as Harry was concerned, he was…hmmmm…needed a backbone, was kind of a punk, but let me not judge too much. He was screwed over pretty badly.
All’s fair…I guess…not…
