Kehlani’s “You Should Be Here” Is The Song I Should’ve Wrote

“You Should Be Here” is an interesting kind of love song. It doesn’t commiserate and it isn’t heartsick. So calmly, the lyrics of Kehlani‘s sleeper R&B hit, evokes those familiar yet all torn-up feelings of a relationship hitting a tough spot.

Baby you should be here, right here
Baby you should be here, right here
Don’t know where you went but you’re lost now
Don’t know where you went but you’re gone now
Don’t know where you went but you’re lost now
Don’t know where you went but you’re gone now

At first listen, “You Should Be Here” can be viewed from the standpoint of still trying to understand how a once promising connection got ruined. It’s partially sung as a bygone situation. Kehlani, as the ripped jeans, rational protagonist in the music video, has already accepted her paramour’s detachment. The statement of “you’re lost now” is her glass menagerie.

Also interesting is to perceive the words someone reminiscing in the moment. Kehlani could be pleading for her flame to pay attention and not get too cavalier. Your better half can only take so much.

Her winning R&B track “You Should Be Here” has the kind ’90s soft rock touches that as funny as this sounds, Celine Dion could’ve sung in her prime. But with her budding age of 19-years-old, Kehlani gives her a sincere warm feeling. As observant as she is, she’s just a kid trying to make sense of what’s unfolding.

I know that you are everything that I ever dreamed of
And hoped that love had a happy ending

Simplistic in its production and Kehlani’s voice what authors of the ’80s would’ve probably described as “creamy”, the straight-to-the-heart “You Should Be Here” is the one of the few songs of 2015 that will matter by your year-end’s lists.

You Should Be Here album“You Should Be Here” is the second track from the You Should Be Here album.
