I think art is really at its most graceful and beautiful when you give viewers the feeling that they’re not alone in this world, that there’s somebody else who gets it. Everyone has had that moment where they see something in a film and they’re like, ‘Wow, that’s such a window into somthing I feel I know.’ It’s not my job to make people comfortable. I want to push them out of their comfort zone to some degree and not satisfy them in the way they think they want to be satisfied. I’ve had this experience where many people have said, ‘Oh, I didn’t get your work and then when I did get your work, I couldn’t get enough of it.’ I think that’s a really nice feeling, to be affecting people like that.”
