At the age of 22, the inspring founder of For Brown Girls and the social media movement #DarkSkinRedLip, Karyn Washington committed suicide earlier this year. Her death sent shockwaves through the black blogosphere, as she was one of the most popular self-love bloggers for black women. Her latter online organization #DarkSkinRedLip especially touched her readers as it encouraged women of color, specifically those of darker hues, to wear bright shades. Washington felt compelled to commence #DarkSkinRedLip after the rapper A$AP Rocky made unnecessary comments in an interview with The Coveteur. He expressed a disdain a red lipstick in general and went on to suggest…or imply… that black girls shouldn’t wear red lipstick at all. QUESTION! Since when did rappers get the temerity to offer beauty advice? His ignorance created a big controversy online.
Sadly, that wasn’t the first time such a remark was made public (apparently Rocky isn’t a fan of candy-color shades like green, blue, or purple on the lips either), but something in Washington made her take a stand as she hoped others would follow suit. They did, and on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr, women of all brown hues uploaded photos of them proudly wearing red lipstick. Major points for womanity worldwide! And red lipstick continues to be worn by the pretty likes of Kerry Washinton, Kelly Rowland, Sanaa Lathan, and Janelle Monae.
So while black beauty has mourned the passing of Washington, you can still honor her cause. With so many lip color options out there, #DarkSkinRedLip can live on. And little do most men, black or white, know is that red lipstick is never just red. Don’t even get us started on the options such as wearing a blue-base or orange/coral-based lipstick. For the hashtag, M.A.C.’s “Ruby Woo” matte lipstick was the most popular choice, so let’s upgrade the list of other red lipsticks to choose from. Whether you’re pale or deep, there’s a color of passion for everyone.
