While watching Kerry Washington‘s Oscars red carpet interview, on ABC, her Atelier Versace dress instantly reminded me of a pop culture moment courtesy of Pee-Wee!

The black leather top of Washington’s dress screamed (to me) the outfit Grace Jones wore during her rendition of “Little Drummer Boy” on the epic TV special Christmas at Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, in 1988.

See the similarity of how the tops are cinched at the waist and the bust has a kind of pronounced shield shape? I found Washington’s dress edgy for the Academy Awards gave the red carpet a touch of Mad Max rock ‘n roll chic, usually reserved for the VMAs.
