When I first noticed FKA Twigs it was her video for “Papi Pacify” and a headshot that was seemingly used as a promotional/press picture of the singer, featuring a semi-deer in the headlights gaze and lips slightly parted and painted red. I thought to myself “Who. Is…this?” The songs from her EP didn’t capture me quite yet, but I liked her odd and artistic presence. I totally related. She really grabbed me however when she released the deliciously erotic single “Two Weeks”. The video was beautiful as she was reminiscent of Aaliyah in the film Queen of the Damned, and then she later released her (under the radar) first full album, LP1. Listen to it you haven’t already, it’s emotional and delicately imaginative, its borderline esoteric outside of anything not Top 40 music. Yet, you’ll be entranced by her vision.
At Terminal 5 (we meet again, years after that riot-like concert of M.I.A. back in 2007), she performed in front of a sold out crowd, including my personal favorites from LP1 (“Pendelum”, “Lights On”, Video Girl”), and it was a movement when she left for second to last, “Two Weeks”. And she can dance, and alone, in a way that is beyond facile…her swivel movements are magical.
Below are pics and short video clips from the show.
