Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP Album Cover Features a Sculpture of Mother Monster

Described as “unreal” by Bullett magazine, the album art for Lady Gaga’s purposedly backwards of a title ARTPOP has a austere and grandeur designed cover that features a photograph of an actual sculpture of the singer, crafted by Jeff Koons. Taking cues from her “Applause” music video that had more references to classic works of art, dance, and film noir than you likely imagined (BuzzFeed.com published an amazing play by play account of the  influences), in the background is a mash-up of The Birth of Venus and what looks to be screen shots from “Applause” in black and white.

Highly a super refined and crisp, this almost post-modern psychedelic take, Koons illustrated Gaga with a pose that reads as confidence masked by a desire to be controlled, and with eyes that are almost dead in expression, yet tethers on quiet inquisition.

ARTPOP will be released on November 11, 2013 in the U.S.
